Akshayakalpa: Battling the Demons in Milk, Dairy, and Food
The festive season is upon us and the stories of good prevailing over evil are rampant. While most of these mythical stories date back centuries, the victory of good is relevant even today – albeit in different ways!
In the world of dairy and food production, there are numerous challenges that need to be addressed to ensure the safety and quality of the products we consume. Nasties like adulterants, contaminants, antibiotics and more are often found in our food and milk that can cause harm over long periods of consumption. We, at Akshayakalpa Organic, are taking on these nasties head-on. With a mission to provide pure and untainted dairy and food products, we are waging a battle against the demons that can lurk in our daily sustenance.
One of the key challenges in the dairy industry is ensuring that milk remains pure and pristine on its journey from the farm to the consumer’s table. Many conventional dairy farms resort to practices that can compromise the quality of milk. These practices include the use of antibiotics and hormones, poor animal welfare conditions, and low-quality feed, which can introduce harmful substances into the milk we consume.
Food safety is a growing concern worldwide, with the increasing incidence of foodborne illnesses and contamination incidents. Armed with a strong commitment to ethical and sustainable farming practices and in-depth knowledge of our trade, we are ready to rage a war against food that is compromised and altered and hope to be a beacon of hope for those seeking pure and unadulterated milk.
On this festive occasion, let’s take a peek at what we do to keep ‘Demons’ out of our food and ensure that the good always emerges victorious:
Organic dairy farming | Conventional dairy farming | |
Living environments of cows | Cows on the Akshayakalpa farms are raised in a stress-free and hygienic environment. They are free-roaming and never tethered, with ample space to play and rest. Happy cows fall sick less often, ensuring the milk is free from antibiotics, induced hormones and stress hormones. | Cows on conventional dairy farms usually live in small, closed sheds without much natural light. They are often tied, causing stress and the release of stress-hormones like cortisol that makes its way into the milk. Due to lack of exercise and hygiene, cows fall sick often, increasing the need for antibiotics. Cows on conventional dairy farms are also subjected to growth hormones to increase productivity |
Food for the cows | The organic fodder for cows on the Akshayakalpa farms is grown on the chemical-free soils of the farm itself, without the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. This ensures that these harmful chemical residues stay out of the cow’s diets and out of the milk too. By keeping a check on the cows’ diet, Akshayakalpa not only ensures the cows get adequate and wholesome nutrition but also prevent aflatoxins from entering their food and milk | Mass-market food and fodder is traditionally the main source of nourishment for cows on conventional dairy farms. With no way to trace the origin of this food, it can have traces of chemical pesticide and fertilizer residue, which makes its way into the milk. Oftentimes, common food like maize and peanuts that is fed to cows could have toxins due to fungi known as aflatoxins that also get transferred to the milk |
Milking, packaging and transport processes | The automated milking process at all Akshayakalpa farms ensures that the organic milk is untouched by human hand. The milk is cooled in a bulk milk chiller to inhibit growth of bacteria and protect its nutrients. Every batch of milk is tested at the farm and plant level to ensure no adulterants, contamination or preservatives reach your family – ever! | In conventional dairy practices, the milking is done by hand. This poses a risk for environmental contamination from dust, dung and insects etc. Due to lack of testing, the milk could also be adulterated with water, sugar, urea and blotting paper for a higher yield. Furthermore, there is no quality test to ensure the milk is as nutritious as it is supposed to be |
While our responsibility to shun evils begins with our organic produce, it does not stop there. The demons in food production not only affect the quality and safety of our food but also harm the environment. Conventional farming practices often lead to soil degradation, water pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions. As the global population continues to grow, sustainable agriculture practices are becoming increasingly vital.
Through our various sustainable initiatives and practices, we strive to maintain the balance of good over evil when it comes to the planet too.
- Through our ‘Let’s Give Back the Milk Pack’ recycling initiative, we, along with our army of proactive patrons have collected back over 19000 Kg of used dairy packaging, reducing the plastic adding to the pollution in our landfills and oceans.
- We are the pioneers of making milk available in biodegradable packaging in the country
- Our zero-discharge farms follow closed-loop systems where the needs of the farm are met by the farm itself.
- Our organic farming practices not just rejuvenate the soil fertility but the use of cow dung and urine as natural fertilizers further reduces the environmental footprint, keeping harmful chemicals from being released into the air and water.
- In addition, we also promote the planting of native trees on our farms to contribute to reforestation efforts and protect local ecosystems.
- Our farm visits incorporate initiatives like ‘Restored for Good’, where patrons can convert old clothes into eco-friendly bags. We also encourage more sustainable homes through composting and kitchen gardening workshops
The demons in agriculture are not limited to the quality of the products but also impact the lives of farmers. Many small-scale farmers face financial difficulties and exploitative practices in the industry.
Our farmer-first initiatives allow us to collaborate with local farmers, empowering them with the knowledge and resources needed for sustainable and ethical dairy and food production, in turn ensuring fair compensation and improved livelihoods for them while producing high-quality products.
In the quest to fight the demons in milk, dairy, and food, we are setting a benchmark of a brand committed to delivering pure, safe, and sustainable products. By promoting ethical farming practices, ensuring food safety, and empowering farmers, they are making a significant contribution to the welfare of consumers, the environment, and the communities they work with. Choosing Akshayakalpa is not just a choice for quality and purity; it’s a choice for a better, healthier future for all.
