Celebrating Makar Sankranthi at the Akshayakalpa farm!
Gratitude, harmony and peace– the underlying emotions that highlight the festival of Sankranti.
One of the first festivals of the calendar year, Makar Sankranti celebrations in Karnataka mark the beginning of the harvest season. It is a celebration that pays homage to the lands that grow our food and the Sun God that showers us with the life-giving energy to do so.
Known as ‘Pongal’ or ‘Maghi’ in the neighbouring states, Makar Sankranti is celebrated with pomp and panache in the Southern parts of India. On the Akshayakalpa Organic farms too, it is an occasion that is reveled with much joy, enthusiasm and excitement.
This year, we open the doors to our Akshayakalpa Organic farm in Tiptur and invite you to be a part of a one-of-its-kind Sankranti celebration near Bangalore! Located at a 3 hours drive, the Tiptur farm is the perfect location to enjoy the true traditional nuances of the rituals and customs of the festival with your friends and family.
At ‘Forgotten Foods – Sankranti Edition’, rediscover the culinary experience of a bygone era as you cook classic Sankranti delicacies the authentic way. Begin by harvesting the freshest organic vegetables from our food forest and prepare your taste buds for a tantalizing treat. Feel the flavours seep into delicious ‘Pongal’ cooked in earthen pots over wood-fire and enjoy the pleasures of slow-cooking. Mix together ‘Ellu Bella’ – an auspicious mixture of sesame seeds, jaggery and sugar candy – that symbolizes sharing and spreading happiness.
Build up an appetite playing village games with your little ones, paint the sky colourful as you teach them how to fly a kite and try your hand at archery. Or simply relax under the cool shade of trees and rejuvenate your body and mind in the fresh, pollution-free air. There is something for everyone!
