This Holi, Let’s GO GREEN! (and pink and yellow and red)!

The festival of colours is around the corner and it is time to bring out the sweets, rejoice in the festivities and spend some quality time with your loved ones.

But that’s not all! This year, it’s also time to celebrate the vibrant hues of nature – Akshayakalpa style!

Join us as we help you prepare for Holi 2024 in a conscious, sustainable and meaningful way! Give your festivities an eco-friendly, green twist with our guide to making 100% natural, harmless, safe-for-skin colour at home and make your celebrations chemical-free!

Here’s what you need to get started:

– Fresh flowers/leaves of your choosing

– Used cotton cloth or newspaper

– Mixer grinder

Method:

1. Pluck the petals of the flowers of your choice. Use only the petals and discard the underside of the flower. For leaves, discard the stems.

2. Spread out the petals/leaves in a thin layer on an old cotton cloth or newspaper and leave out in the sun to dry for 2-3 days. Remember to weigh down the corners of the cloth or paper.

3. Once dried, grind the flowers/leaves in a mixer grinder until fine and powdery

4. Your natural, safe and chemical-free colours are ready to use! Apply as dry powder on face for the festivities or dissolve in water for water-guns.

A guide to choosing the right petals:

Neem Leaves: Create a beautiful, calming light green colour with neem leaves. Furthermore, enjoy the antiseptic qualities of this powder and provide relief to your acne and rashes.

Moringa Leaves: Or leaves of the ‘Drumstick tree’ are perfect for a darker green tint. The antibacterial properties of these leaves also keep skin infections and sunburns at bay.

Marigold petals: Use the sunshine yellow flowers for an earthy yellow shade of colour, while the orange marigolds lend a darker tinge. The extracts from both these petals do wonders in repairing dry, damaged skin.

Pink: Miniature roses or button roses are ideal to obtain a pinkish hue. Not only does this add a cheerful feel to your colours but also moisturizes the skin, reduces redness and inflammation.

Red: For a deep red colour, one must look beyond flower petals. Cut organic beetroot into thin slices/small pieces and dry in sunlight for an extra day. This powder will not just add a burst of exuberance to your colours but also reduce your tan and give you a hydrated, healthy glow.
