Backyard vs. Conventional poultry, what’s the right choice for you?

Backyard vs. Conventional poultry, what’s the right choice for you?

The world of poultry farming can be a confusing place. With terms like free-range, cage-free, and backyard flying around, how do you really know what’s best?

So, let’s simplify it. Let’s start with what we do at Akshayakalpa: backyard poultry farming. What does that really mean? And how is it different from the conventional poultry system that most of us unknowingly support?

The conventional poultry system-
In conventional poultry farms, it’s all about maximizing production, often at the cost of the birds’ well-being. Hens are kept in tightly packed housing systems, with barely any room to move. Hygiene? Compromised.

The feed they’re given isn’t organically grown. It’s often loaded with chemicals and antibiotics to speed up weight gain and boost egg production.  Everything from lighting to temperature is controlled, not to comfort the birds but to control their laying cycles. It’s a factory setup designed to churn out eggs, not raise healthy hen

And the result? Stressed birds, poor-quality eggs, and a system that puts profit over purity.

So, what’s backyard poultry?
Now picture something very different.
Smaller flocks raised by families, often by women who care for each bird individually.
Their diet? Homegrown organic grains and kitchen waste, not processed commercial feed. It’s sustainable, natural, and effective.
These hens enjoy outdoor spaces, limited, but enough to forage, scratch around, and do all the things hens naturally love to do.
This kind of setup not only empowers households by providing income and food security, but it also leads to healthier, happier hens and, yes, better eggs too.

And that’s exactly what we follow at Akshayakalpa.
Raised in small groups by our partner farmers, our hens receive personal care and attention. When a hen feels unwell, she isn’t pumped with antibiotics. Instead, natural remedies like turmeric, garlic, and dry ginger come into play. And if needed, she’s gently quarantined to ensure the rest of the flock stays safe.

Their food? Only organic grains and farm-grown feed with zero chemicals and absolutely no synthetic additives or hormones.

Still wondering if it’s too good to be true? Don’t just take our word for it.
Come visit our farms. Walk through the open spaces where our hens roam. See how we care, how we feed, and how we ensure that every egg we deliver is a result of mindful farming, not mass production.
